Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician Malaysia, has an illustrious career spanning more than three decades, specialising in national accounts statistics, external trade statistics, industrial and construction statistics, and services statistics. He has held several esteemed positions, including leading the national statistical office, being a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Official Statistics and Institute Statistics Malaysia, chairing the National Organising Committee of ISI World Statistics Congress 2019, as well as acting as the Sixth Census Commissioner in 2020 and recently as the Agriculture Census 2024 Chief Commissioner.
One of his significant accomplishments was introducing the Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies Report and the MyLocal Statistics Report, which provide statistics at the minor administrative level. He also initiated the use of social media to engage young people, users, and stakeholders in the statistical community. With his vast knowledge and expertise, he plays a crucial role in driving national and international statistical development. His leadership led to an initiative to strengthen the Malaysian Statistical System, culminating in DOSM’s role as a central agency with eight objectives to achieve by 2025. Recently, the Malaysian Government appointed him to oversee the development of the National Main Database (PADU), which entails extensive database integration across government agencies to address national issues.
Dr. Uzir has been recognized for his active involvement and contributions at the international level. He was appointed as the Chair of the 18th Session of the Governing Council of the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (GC SIAP, 2022), Chairman of the Bureau of the ESCAP Committee on Statistics (2018-2020), and Chairman of the 7th and 8th sessions of the OIC Statistical Commission (2018-2019). He also served as Vice-chair of the Working Group (WG) on the Development of the OIC Statistical Commission’s New Strategic Vision (2019-2020), Co-chair of the Bureau of Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Committee on Statistics (2020-2022), and a member of the High-Level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for Monitoring Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In addition, Dr. Uzir was part of the Statistical Advisory Panel for the 2020 Human Development Report (HDR), Friends of the Chair Group on the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics (FOC-FPOS), and various expert groups globally, including the elected member of GC SIAP (2022-2024), International Comparison Programme Governing Board (ICP GB) representative for the Asia region (2021-2024), United Nations Committee of Experts on International Statistical Classifications (UN CEISC) (2021), Advisory Group of the Handbook on Management and Organisation of National Statistical Systems, Fourth Edition (2021), and the Data Stewardship Working Group (2021). He also served as a member of the Working Group Open Data, ASEAN Community Statistical System (ACSS), and OIC Statistical Commission (OIC-StatCom).
